Backpacking Austin Creek

From Backpacking Austin Creek State Park

Hello All!

Just had another A+ backpacking trip with the dudes.

Austin Creek State Recreation Area, it’s only about 20 minutes up from Guerneville, CA (pass through Armstrong Redwoods State Park, and go up a little road … like 3 miles … And park at bullfrog creek campground). The hiking was spectacular, our whiskey was exquisite, and the company was perfect. Three days in the backcountry puts the spirits in the right place.

Thursday night I packed.

Love getting the gear ready.

Nothing feels quite like it.

Friday. Cut out of work early, roll up to Stumptown Brewery, enjoy a nice cold brew.

The hike in was at night.

But with a super clear sky we could make out these gorgeous rolling hills surrounding the trail.

Here’s a shot in the day to show you what we were trekking through.

We camped out at Tom Creek and it was a super chill 3 and a half miles into this little slice of paradise.

Rolling stream, fire pit, flat dirt. What more could a man ask for.

Probably ended up spending over 50% of this trip next to the fire. Between Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night, and Sunday morning, the sum of the hours that were spent just chilling and staring into the flames was ridiculous.

And the venue. Seriously. The redwoods, the oaks … Being surrounded by glorious nature brings the stoke level up a notch.

And the Pontz … What a dude.

Also … You wanna know something I respect … When every man on the trip brings his own coffee making supplies.

Respect.

This was a mellow trip.

Saturday we cruised a sum total of like 5 miles, most of it just wandering around the rad little trail next to a stream.

The pace was chiller than ever, and the three of us just kicked it.

There were wild boar traps all around.

And we would totally come upon these meadows where they had probably been causing a ruckus in the past few days / weeks. Since we didn’t see any of the boar, we’re gonna have to keep going back til we do. Also, this is one of the most idyllic places ever … So ya … That too is a good reason pulling us back here.

Hiked up to this other little camp, Manning Flat.

Equally Awesome here.

The kale and the canned fish put Rocci in a special place.

(A couple times that day …)

Swimming holes are an essential element of any good adventure.

We ended up making use of this rad (yet freezing as all hell) little spot.

These dudes.

I know I keep saying it … But damn … Just so friggin good for my soul to spend a couple days with these guys.

There was also some nature identification going on.

Pontz got this pamphlet with all these wild mushrooms on it for identification.

No one was ballsy enough to shnarf one down, but it was nevertheless a cool little side addition to our trip.

Speaking of nature …

These little duders were everywhere !!!

Probably the most physical exertion of the trip … Gathering wood for our Saturday night burn.

There were a few bottles of whiskey that needed to be taken care of … And the only way to get that done was with lots of fire.

Check out this rad little bench in our camp!

Dude.

Evening arrives.

Appetizers and fine red wine.

What else is there to say.

This is the good life.

Pontz. Danch. Redwoods. Can’t ask for much more.

On Sunday we hiked out.

On Monday went back to work.

And the next weekend … To compliment the badass backpacking trip … Beasted the Golden Gate half marathon in the pouring rain with my big bro. Really proud of this guy for tackling one of the more gnar races out there.

Life is good.

Okay … Off to cousin Kim’s wedding … See you on the other side.

Much love!
