Hello All!

Well I am just really really stoked right now. I know, I know, this is not a knew thing for the blog, but as you can see by the above pic, I just had a chance to meet one of my personal heroes, the creator of the Ruby programming language – Matz!

About four years ago I began programming. My first few months at City College studying C++ were incredibly daunting. I was inspired to see what computers could do, to take these machines and turn them into something more, but poking away in pico on the school’s Unix machine was really tough. I just couldn’t see how computer programs actually ‘made’ things.

And then I met Glen. He was the first person to really show me the magic of computers. Chilling on Jesse’s couch, hacking little web apps, he opened my eyes to the world of Ruby. A programming language with a simple philosophy – to make you happier.

And after a semester of Software Engineering with Abbas, I was on my way.

I haven’t looked back since. Thanks, Glen

Okay, on to RubyConf.

I hit up a cool little block party Friday night.

Sponsored by a few tech companies in the area, they had this sweet band.

NOLA!

I made a new friend – Kouji.

Working through a language barrier, we schmoozed it up.

… And then on Saturday I went to his talk.

Dude.

Lunch was solid.

Catfish and fried chicken and gumbo.

I can vibe.

There was this excellent talk in the AM (notes at the bottom of the post) about moving from mongodb to mysql.

It was interesting in that mongo is the hot technology and mysql the old and less sexy solution.

I really really enjoyed the wisdom here …

On Friday night I met up with an old UCSC buddy Kenny.

He’s a Ruby dude at ZenDesk and his company threw my favorite party of the conference.

It was down at the Crescent City Brewery. Word.

But seriously though, the French Quarter is nuts.

So nuts.

Went on a nice morning run and packed up just an hour or so ago.

One of the dopest benefits of the conference – teeshirts!!!

I got five – yes five – free teeshirts. Dudes, I am set for like a solid two years with these. (No clue where they are gonna go though, dresser space is a premium in my world.)

My notes on github have been steadily growing the past three days:

… And now I am gonna sit back, enjoy my coffee, spend the rest of my morning soaking up Ruby, and then fly home to my fellow blogger.

:)
